East District and Texas Annual Conference Events for 2014
Clergy Benefits Academy Sept. 24 - 26, 2014
To all active clergy members of the UMC:
The General Board of Pension & Health Benefits of the UMC invites you to attend the Clergy Benefits Academy!
This is for all ages & stages of ministry-new ordinands, early-career clergy, mid-career clergy, ready-to retire clergy, district superintendents, clergy in extension ministries & spouses.
Chuck and Kathy Huffman attended this event last fall in New Jersey, and they strongly recommend it for all pastors of every age. Young pastors can benefit from this info most of all! This is a great opportunity, with our Conference Center for Clergy Excellence picking up nearly the entire cost! Please take advantage of this offer, and register right away!
The Clergy Benefits Academy begins at 1:00 pm on Wed., Sept. 24th with worship & an opening plenary session. The event will conclude on Fri., Sept. 26th at 2:30 pm.
Classes are scheduled on a track, so you can attend each session. Your assigned track will be provided to you when you arrive at the event’s registration table.
You can earn 1.5 CEUs if you complete 10 classes & 1 CEU if you complete 7 classes. At event registration, you will receive a passport that will be stamped at the completion of each class. This passport will help us determine the CEUs to be awarded at the conclusion of the event.

Saturday, October 11, McMahan Chapel would like to invite everyone to celebrate 181 years of devotion to the Christian faith in its original spot in Texas. The worship service will begin at 10:30 am and will be followed by an “old time” covered dish dinner in the adjacent Jack and Charlsie Maund Museum and Event Center.
This year’s speaker will be our own Rev. Chuck Huffman. Although he needs no introduction, let me tell you a few things about our East District Superintendent. He was baptized as an infant at First UMC in Hooks, Texas. After marrying Kathy Ann Goodwin, he continued to serve in ministry and mission. His leadership skills began to emerge at Red Lick UMC near Texarkana. It was there that he answered God’s call to ordained ministry. He is a graduate of Southern Methodist University – Perkins School of Theology, and received a Master of Divinity degree. In his 20 years as a minister/pastor, Rev. Huffman has served several small to mid-size churches, mostly in Northeast Texas and a larger church in Port Arthur. He is now into his third year as East District Superintendent. In his own words he expresses his “love of Christ and His Church and a particular passion and concern for the more rural churches of our Texas Conference”. His prayer is for the churches, pastors and leaders of our churches – for God’s protection over us, and for God’s direction for us as we seek together to become increasingly effective in making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world! Rev. Huffman and his wife have 2 children. Their daughter, Chasity, is married to Jason Lansdell and they have 2 children, Josey and Abby. They live in Flower Mound, near Dallas. Their son, Eric, is married to Geovanna. They also have 2 children, Joelle and Koen. Both Eric and Geovanna are ordained elders in the United Methodist Church. Moving from Kansas City, they will be starting a new church in Houston.
Our special music will be performed by Charlotte Davis. She is no stranger to the San Augustine and Sabine County area. Her beautiful voice is a regular feature at the Presbyterian Church in San Augustine. Congregational music will be under the direction of Rev. Martin Doran, pastor of 1st United Methodist Church in San Augustine
We look forward to a service that will interest everyone. To reach McMahan Chapel from San Augustine, take St. Hwy 21 East 10 miles, turn right onto Spur 35, traveling 2 miles. From Milam, take St. Hwy 21 West approximately 10 miles turning left onto Spur 35.
This invitation is to join in the Celebration of Christ and His Church and is for EVERYONE. Come, bring your “covered dish” (or not) and feast on the good news of Christ. Need more information? Call 936-288-0477 or 936-275-5542.
